The diminished snowpack has accelerated the fire season, particularly in Colorado and Nebraska, where wildfires have already charred thousands of hectares. California has also reported wildfires, indicating the dry conditions favoring fire spread. The abnormally warm temperatures and early snowmelt have set the stage for extreme wildfires, as shown by research linking snowpack decline to severe fire outcomes.
Despite the concerning trends, there are opportunities to mitigate fire risks. While long-term snowpack declines persist due to climate change, occasional snowy winters from weather patterns like El Niño offer chances for prescribed burning, which can reduce fuel loads and fire severity. In Canada, low snowpack poses a similar fire risk, especially in the western regions, and combined with heat and drought, could lead to a severe fire season despite the absence of the recent U.S. heatwave.
