Crews successfully retrieved the remains of nine individuals who lost their lives in a recent avalanche in California, as announced by authorities on Saturday. The operation to recover the victims was challenging due to heavy snowfall.

After four days of intense efforts, a search team was able to locate the bodies of eight of the victims, including one individual who had been missing since the avalanche occurred near Castle Peak close to Lake Tahoe. The ninth missing person was also discovered in proximity to the other victims, although visibility was severely limited during the initial search due to white-out conditions.

Recovery operations were temporarily halted for a few days due to the heavy snowfall and the ongoing risk of additional avalanches. Helicopters from the California National Guard and California Highway Patrol were instrumental in retrieving the bodies on Saturday morning by airlifting them from the mountain and transferring them to specialized snowcat vehicles for transportation.

Authorities had initiated avalanche mitigation work by using water to destabilize the snowpack in the area to reduce risks for rescue teams. Various organizations, including California Highway Patrol air operations, Nevada County Sheriff’s search and rescue, Tahoe Nordic search and rescue, Pacific Gas & Electric, the Sierra Avalanche Center, and other groups, collaborated in the mitigation and search efforts.
