Rob Shaw, a wheelchair tennis player from North Bay, Ont., is set to retire after participating in the Australian Open, as announced by Tennis Canada. Shaw, 36, primarily competed in the quad division for players with significant functional loss in one or both upper extremities and affecting at least three extremities.
Throughout his career, Shaw amassed an impressive record with 54 ITF titles, including 25 in singles and 29 in doubles. His achievements include 10 titles at the Birmingham Nationals, making him the Canadian player with the most combined titles. In 2023, Shaw reached a career-high ranking of No. 6 in singles and No. 3 in doubles.
Shaw’s breakthrough came in 2022 when he entered the top eight, earning a spot in his first Grand Slam tournament at the U.S. Open. He secured a runner-up finish in doubles alongside David Wagner. Subsequently, in 2023, Shaw clinched second place at both Roland-Garros and Wimbledon in doubles, partnering with Heath Davidson from Australia.
On the international stage, Shaw claimed a gold medal in 2019 and a silver in 2023 at the Para Pan American Games. He also represented Canada at the 2021 and 2024 Paralympic Games, reaching the quarterfinals in singles play.
Shaw is scheduled to compete in his 11th and final Grand Slam on January 27 before transitioning to a part-time role as a Wheelchair Tennis high performance consultant with Tennis Canada.
