Conservative Member of Parliament (MP) Jamil Jivani disclosed that he engaged in discussions with Trump administration officials in Washington, D.C., during his self-organized trip aimed at enhancing trade relations between Canada and the United States. Jivani conveyed that U.S. President Donald Trump conveyed a message of affection to Canadians through him.

The MP, a friend of U.S. Vice President JD Vance from their university days, expressed his willingness to collaborate with the governing Liberals before embarking on his journey, although he claimed to have received a cold response. Jivani voiced his intention to facilitate better communication between the two nations.

Prime Minister Mark Carney noted that while Jivani received a briefing from Canada-U.S. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc, the Liberal government maintains regular communication with the U.S. administration independently. Jivani mentioned his efforts to arrange a meeting with LeBlanc to debrief him on his discussions in Washington.

Jivani mentioned plans to meet with representatives from General Motors and other industry leaders during his visit. He is scheduled to attend the National Prayer Breakfast, a significant annual event in Washington, where he aims to leverage his friendship with Vance for Canada’s benefit.

The MP reached out to Prime Minister Carney and other Liberal Members of Parliament (MPs) via email, offering his assistance in alignment with the government’s goals. Jivani emphasized the importance of unity between political parties in addressing trade challenges, particularly regarding the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement.

Conservative MP Gérard Deltell expressed his party’s readiness to support the Liberal government in negotiations with the Trump administration. He highlighted the shared goal of ensuring the prosperity of Canadians through collaborative efforts.

Jivani’s trip to Washington, particularly focusing on the impact of GM’s layoffs in his community, received mixed reactions. While Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre emphasized the need to advocate for local jobs, Industry Minister Mélanie Joly expressed skepticism regarding Jivani’s approach in addressing the situation.

The journey of Jamil Jivani to Washington signifies a pivotal moment in Canada-U.S. relations, emphasizing the importance of bipartisan collaboration in navigating trade challenges and advocating for Canadian interests on the international stage.
