June marks National Indigenous History Month, and CBC Music has chosen five Indigenous musicians who are gaining recognition for their music, spanning from rockabilly sensations to indie pop singer-songwriters.

This year’s lineup features Siibii, Cat Clyde, Lov, Sunsetto, and Brettyn Rose, each showcasing songs that range from tender love ballads to empowering anthems celebrating matriarchy.

Let’s delve into each artist’s journey:

**Siibii**
Siibii, formerly known by a different name, underwent a transformation before releasing their self-titled EP in November. This change was sparked by a conversation that made them realize the importance of accurately representing themselves. Siibii’s music delves into personal themes like substance abuse, domestic violence, and sexuality, reflecting the reality of Indigenous experiences in urban settings. Hailing from the Cree community of Mistissini, Que., and now based in Montreal, Siibii’s music has garnered attention, leading to a Juno nomination and a win for the National Arts Centre’s emerging artist award. They are set to kick off a cross-Canada tour soon.

**Cat Clyde**
Métis singer-songwriter Cat Clyde, known for her roots in punk music, has transitioned to a country, blues, and rockabilly sound with her solo work. Her latest album, “Mud Blood Bone,” showcases a return to her punk influences while exploring themes of love and self-discovery. With sold-out shows across the U.K. and Canada, Clyde’s music resonates with audiences, blending raw emotion with powerful vocals and captivating guitar melodies.

**LOV**
Lovina Tootoosis, also known as LOV, draws inspiration from her upbringing surrounded by art and music. Originally from Poundmaker Cree Nation in Saskatchewan, LOV’s music reflects a blend of U.K. soul influences. Her debut album, “Iskwêw,” set for release in June, highlights her journey as a young mother pursuing her dreams through music. LOV’s work emphasizes empowering messages for women and matriarchal figures, resonating with audiences through her warm and captivating voice.

**Sunsetto**
Mi’kmaq artist Sunsetto, also known as Kyle Mischiek, showcases his talent for crafting catchy pop melodies influenced by indie pop, R&B, and electronic sounds. Having released his debut album in 2024, Sunsetto’s music has gained traction, with notable collaborations and performances. While teasing new music on social media, Sunsetto continues to captivate audiences with his heartfelt songwriting and engaging performances.
