Sherrone Moore is currently in custody as authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding his arrest shortly after his termination as the University of Michigan football coach due to an alleged inappropriate relationship with a staff member. Details of Moore’s arrest are pending release, but he has been detained at Washtenaw County Jail since Wednesday evening.

The Pittsfield Township Police Department responded to reports of an alleged assault in the township, near Michigan Stadium, where they apprehended an individual without disclosing a specific name, later confirming that the suspect is slated for arraignment on Friday.

Following an internal investigation, the University of Michigan terminated Moore, 39, citing evidence of misconduct and violating university policies. Athletic director Warde Manuel emphasized a zero-tolerance approach towards such behavior.

Moore, a father of three, did not respond to inquiries regarding the alleged relationship. Reports suggest the incident occurred shortly before his dismissal was publicly announced.

Having achieved a 9-3 record this season and an 8-5 record in his inaugural year, Moore, a native of Derby, Kan., signed a lucrative five-year contract in September 2024 with an annual base salary of $5.5 million US. The university’s decision to terminate him for cause means they are not obligated to buy out the remaining years of his contract.

The 18th-ranked Wolverines, under interim coach Biff Poggi, are scheduled to face No. 14 Texas in the Citrus Bowl on Dec. 31. Moore, initially hired as tight ends coach in 2018 by Jim Harbaugh, ascended through the coaching ranks and took over as head coach following the 2023 national championship win.

This incident marks the second scandal involving a football coach in Michigan in recent years, with Michigan State dismissing coach Mel Tucker in 2023 for misconduct related to communication with an activist and rape survivor.
