Canada’s new foreign influence watchdog, Anton Boegman, revealed that Americans looking to impact a potential Alberta referendum on separating from Canada may need to register as foreign agents. Boegman emphasized that his jurisdiction extends beyond federal politics, covering provincial, territorial, and municipal processes. He highlighted that if activities align with the criteria, registration would be mandatory for individuals attempting to influence an Alberta referendum on separation on behalf of the U.S. government or a foreign entity.

Boegman’s statements coincide with efforts by Alberta independence supporters to amass over 177,000 signatures to trigger a referendum on Alberta’s secession from Canada. Notably, the Alberta Prosperity Project pursued talks in Washington with Trump administration officials and explored the possibility of securing a substantial US line of credit to support an independent Alberta.

The concerns raised by senators such as Paula Simon and Yuen Pau Woo revolve around potential foreign interference in Alberta’s referendum process, particularly from the United States and other countries. Boegman acknowledged that the issue of foreign interference is prevalent in Canada, occurring across various levels and regions, including the northern communities and territories.

Boegman’s appointment as Canada’s inaugural foreign influence watchdog was approved following the legislation’s adoption to establish a foreign agent registry. The government aims to finalize regulations for the registry soon, with Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree anticipating their adoption in the coming months. Boegman’s nomination was endorsed by both the House of Commons and the Senate on March 13.
