Stratford’s long-standing swan parade will not take place this year, as announced by the city. Traditionally held each first Sunday in April, the parade featured a procession of swans making their way to the Avon River in Stratford, accompanied by a pipe and drum band. Spectators gathered to witness the swans being released into the water after their winter stay.
Quin Malott, the parks and forestry manager for Stratford, shared that the release process is reverting to a more relaxed and natural pace. The decision to forego a fixed release date is to ensure the swans’ well-being by aligning it with optimal water levels, weather conditions, and mating behaviors.
Since 1918, the city has cared for the swans, guiding them from their winter residence behind the William Allman Arena to the river each spring. The event’s roots trace back to Ted Blowes, a former mayor of Stratford.
Malott expressed concerns over the stress the fixed date caused to staff and caregivers, as it sometimes led to unfavorable conditions like icy river waters or inadequate water levels. He emphasized the importance of releasing the swans at the right time when they exhibit signs of readiness for nesting and territorial behavior.
Acknowledging the event’s popularity, Malott highlighted the challenges posed by large crowds that obstructed views for many attendees. Amy Thistle, a fifth-generation Stratford resident, shared her decision to stop attending the parade due to overcrowding and disturbances among spectators, emphasizing the need for a peaceful and enjoyable community event.
While some residents like LoriAnn Britton lament the cancellation, citing its significance as a longstanding community tradition, others recognize the importance of prioritizing the swans’ welfare and staff’s well-being. Moving forward, the City of Stratford plans to notify the public of the swans’ release through road closure announcements, allowing interested individuals to witness the serene sight of the swans in the river.
Despite the absence of the formal parade, the opportunity to observe the swans’ release remains a cherished experience for locals. Thistle described the beauty of watching the swans come together with their heart-shaped heads, highlighting the tranquility and natural wonder of the moment.
