Parts of the island region of Newfoundland and Labrador are set to experience strong winds and freezing rain. Environment Canada has issued a yellow winter storm watch for northern, western, and central Newfoundland. The inclement weather is anticipated to commence Wednesday night and early Thursday morning, persisting through the evening.
Forecasts suggest that most affected areas could receive up to 25 centimeters of snow, with the potential for over 35 centimeters in elevated terrain along the west coast. Wind gusts may reach 80 km/h. CBC meteorologist Ashley Brauweiler mentioned that the snow will transition to ice pellets around noon for a few hours, followed by freezing rain for a subsequent period.
During a technical briefing on Tuesday afternoon, Environment Canada warning preparedness meteorologist Eric Tomlinson highlighted the arrival of a “potent” weather system originating from the United States, expected to impact Ontario on Tuesday evening before moving northeastward.
Tomlinson advised the public to stay vigilant for potential transportation disruptions and heed warnings from local authorities. Notably, as of approximately 4 p.m. on Tuesday, there are no weather alerts issued for the Avalon Peninsula. While areas such as Gander, Clarenville, and the region from Channel-Port aux Basques to the Burin Peninsula are not under the yellow watch, they are under a special weather statement.
These areas are forecasted to receive around 10 centimeters of snow, along with ice pellets and freezing rain followed by an extended period of rainfall. Environment Canada’s latest prediction indicates that the southern portion of the island will experience the heaviest rainfall on Thursday afternoon, with total amounts potentially reaching 50 millimeters.
