The union representing 4,400 flight attendants at WestJet has given a 72-hour strike notice, potentially leading to a strike during the busy summer travel season. The Canadian Union of Public Employees stated that significant differences remain between the two parties on crucial matters.

Alia Hussain, chair of the union’s WestJet group, emphasized the need for fair changes and expressed ongoing efforts to secure a reasonable agreement. Despite the strike notice, there is still room for negotiation to avoid a strike, with continuous bargaining efforts underway.

In response to the union’s strike notice, WestJet issued a 72-hour lockout notice. The airline, Canada’s second-largest carrier, confirmed active negotiations to reach a resolution. WestJet CEO Alexis von Hoensbroech expressed regret over the inconveniences caused to travelers due to the situation.

If an agreement is not reached, potential job action could commence at 12:01 a.m. MT on Sunday. WestJet has allowed passengers with flights scheduled between July 30 and August 4 to make free changes or cancellations. Regional WestJet Encore flights and code-share services are not expected to be impacted by the strike.

In case of flight disruptions, affected guests will receive refunds or alternative arrangements as necessary. An agreement outlining procedures for managing flight operations and crew logistics during a work stoppage was recently signed by both parties.

A key concern for the union is the issue of unpaid ground duties, while WestJet maintains that all tasks are compensated under a credit hour system. Aviation management expert John Gradek warned that even a short shutdown could result in significant financial losses for the airline during the peak summer travel period.

With more than 600 daily flights and a substantial passenger volume, WestJet faces potential operational challenges if a strike occurs.
