Although Ullmark’s performance this season has been up and down, his absence creates a notable gap in the Senators’ lineup. Ullmark, aged 32, has recorded 14 wins in 28 games this season, with a 2.95 goals-against average and .881 save percentage. During his last outing against the Toronto Maple Leafs, he was substituted after conceding four goals on 14 shots.
Staios chose not to provide further details out of respect for Ullmark, but teammates expressed their solidarity with him ahead of their upcoming match against the Columbus Blue Jackets. Alternate captain Thomas Chabot emphasized the team’s commitment to supporting Ullmark during this challenging period, highlighting that personal well-being takes precedence over sports.
The responsibility now falls on Merilainen to step up in Ullmark’s absence. The 23-year-old goaltender, with a 4-6 record and .874 save percentage in nine starts this season, demonstrated his capabilities last year when he filled in for an injured Ullmark, achieving a commendable 7-2-1 record and three shutouts.
With the Senators (18-14-5) vying for a playoff position in a competitive Eastern Conference, Merilainen’s performance will be crucial. Captain Brady Tkachuk commended Merilainen’s competitive spirit and expressed confidence in his abilities to deliver on the ice. Merilainen will start against Columbus, with Hunter Shepard called up from the Belleville Senators to serve as the backup.
Despite various injury challenges this season, including Brady Tkachuk’s extended absence due to a thumb injury, the team has persevered. Chabot acknowledged that coping with Ullmark’s absence is part of the NHL reality, stressing the need for the team to elevate their game collectively to support their goaltender.
In positive news for the Senators, defenseman Tyler Kleven is set to return after missing three games, and forward Shane Pinto, who has been sidelined for 10 games, will be a game-time decision. Pinto participated in his first full practice on Sunday, while defenseman Nick Jensen will be a healthy scratch.
