Rising talent Gabriel Diallo leads the five-player lineup for Canada’s Davis Cup qualifier versus Brazil next month at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. Joining Diallo on the team are Liam Draxl from Newmarket, Ont., Alexis Galarneau from Laval, Que., Nicolas Arsenault from Richmond Hill, Ont., and Cleeve Harper from Calgary, as confirmed by Tennis Canada in a recent announcement.
The initial round of matches is scheduled for Feb. 6-7 at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre. Diallo is poised to participate in his 10th consecutive Davis Cup appearance after breaking into the top 100 of the ATP Tour rankings in 2024 and securing his first ATP Tour title at the Libema Open last year.
The outcome of the upcoming tie will determine which nation progresses to the second qualifying stage in September. The seven successful teams from the second round will join the host and defending champion, Italy, in the Davis Cup Final 8 in November. The Canada-Brazil matchup will kick off with two singles matches, followed by a doubles match and two singles matches on the subsequent day.
Canadian captain Frank Dancevic expressed enthusiasm about the strong team selected for the Vancouver Davis Cup tie, emphasizing a renewed determination following last year’s absence from the final stage. Having previously clinched the Davis Cup title in 2022, Canada advanced to the first qualifying round by defeating Israel 4-0 in a World Group I fixture in Halifax last September.
Draxl currently holds the 132nd position in the latest singles rankings, while Galarneau sits at No. 213 and Arsenault ranks 501st. Harper, on the other hand, is ranked 94th in doubles. Diallo’s victory against Zizou Bergs of Belgium at the Libema Open in June 2025 marked his inaugural ATP Tour title win, showcasing his growing prowess in the tennis world.
