Kevin Cheveldayoff, the general manager of the Jets, expressed shared disappointment with fans as the team continues to struggle in the NHL standings. During a mid-season media session, Cheveldayoff acknowledged the team’s poor performance but did not commit to immediate changes to improve the situation.

He emphasized the need for improvement, stating, “To this point, obviously, it’s been very disappointing. We need to find a way to be better.” Cheveldayoff then resorted to common phrases, mentioning that controlling the present circumstances, facing adversity, and winning in the league are all challenging aspects.

The Jets are currently enduring a nine-game losing streak and occupy the bottom spot in the NHL with a 15-21-4 record and 34 points. In comparison, at this time last year, the team boasted a much stronger record of 27-12-2 and 56 points, eventually clinching the Presidents’ Trophy with an impressive 56-22-4 record and 116 points.

Following a promising start to the current season with an 8-3 record, the Jets have since struggled, recording a 7-18-4 run. Recent setbacks include blowing a significant lead against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Fans’ frustration was evident as TV cameras captured a supporter wearing a paper bag over their head at a recent game in Ottawa.

Cheveldayoff acknowledged the passionate fan base and expressed understanding of their disappointment, recognizing the unpredictable nature of sports. The team’s drastic decline from its previous successful season is notable, with only the 1942-43 New York Rangers having experienced a similar fall from champions to last place.

Local residents, such as Reece Cullen and Brad Harrison, voiced their disappointment and frustration with the team’s performance. Many fans had hoped for progress in the team’s development, which has not materialized, leading to widespread disillusionment.

‘Winning in this league is tough’

Cheveldayoff highlighted the Jets’ close losses in one-goal games and stressed the importance of sticking to the team’s structure to secure victories. He defended head coach Scott Arniel and his staff, emphasizing their dedication and frustration with the current situation.

Criticism has been directed at the team’s management for not making roster adjustments to accommodate veterans or promising prospects from the Manitoba Moose, the Jets’ AHL affiliate. The reluctance to move players to the Moose stems from the risk of losing them to waivers and other NHL teams.

Regarding potential changes, Cheveldayoff mentioned ongoing evaluations of available options, indicating a willingness to explore different strategies. He noted that many teams are in a similar position, assessing their situations and considering potential moves as the season progresses.

Recent trades in the NHL have involved assets that the Jets lack due to previous deals for veteran players aimed at championship contention. Cheveldayoff acknowledged the importance of learning from past decisions and adapting to the challenges of managing an NHL team.

The unexpected retirement of prospect Chaz Lucius due to a hereditary disorder further compounded the team’s challenges, as such players were expected to contribute immediately. The absence of impactful prospects from the Moose for potential call-ups has raised concerns among fans and underscored the team’s current struggles.
