UPDATE, March 19 — Coquitlam mudslide disrupts electricity supply amid forecasted heavy rainfall in certain areas of British Columbia’s South Coast.

An urgent evacuation directive has been put in place for a section of a small community close to Bella Bella, B.C., due to intense rainfall affecting a large part of the central and southern coastal regions of the province.

Residents residing in a segment of Martin Valley, situated in Electoral Area A of the Central Coast Regional District, are mandated to vacate promptly.

The regional district declared a local state of emergency on Tuesday, citing the significant risk posed by landslides and flooding to the well-being of individuals.

Additionally, on Wednesday evening, an evacuation order was also issued for parts of the nearby Ocean Falls vicinity.

Martin Valley, located approximately 35 kilometers northeast of Bella Bella, is under the evacuation order. Evacuees are instructed to adhere to the designated evacuation route, secure their residences, gather essential belongings like medicines, wallets, and insurance information, and proceed to the Old Bank Inn in Ocean Falls for support registration.

Furthermore, a cautionary evacuation alert has been activated for another section of the community due to ongoing flooding and the potential danger of landslides originating from Mt. Caro Marion above the village of Martin Valley, as reported by EmergencyInfoBC.

Steve Emery, the director representing Electoral Area A of the regional district, mentioned that heavy rainfall has caused flooding on a few roads and in some home basements but clarified that no landslides have been recorded thus far.

He noted that most residents under evacuation orders have chosen to stay put, emphasizing that Ocean Falls residents are aware of the risks associated with living in a landslide-prone zone.

Emery expressed hope for the provincial government to ensure proper maintenance of local highways by contractors, pointing out the remoteness of the area and the challenges it poses due to limited accessibility and population density.

A statement from the regional district highlighted the history of landslides in the area above Martin Valley, including a fatal incident in 1965 that claimed six lives.

Flood monitoring agencies have issued a flood watch for the Central Coast, indicating possible overflow along riverbanks. However, this was later downgraded to a high streamflow advisory as precipitation rates tapered off.

Parts of the Central Coast are also under a rainfall alert, particularly in the vicinity of Rivers Inlet, south of Bella Bella. Environment Canada forecasts between 150 and 200 millimeters of rainfall for coastal communities, with mountain areas expecting up to 250 mm and possible localized amounts nearing 300 mm.

Continuing rain is projected for the South Coast, with a prolonged atmospheric river event anticipated to bring rain to various northern regions, including Metro Vancouver, Howe Sound, the Fraser Valley, and parts of Vancouver Island. The agency warns of potential road water pooling and heightened landslide risks.

Moreover, drivers are advised to exercise caution as localized flooding is expected, with potential road closures due to flooding. The possibility of landslides in vulnerable terrains is also highlighted.

High streamflow advisories have been issued for multiple regions, including Vancouver Island, the Fraser Valley, the South Coast, North Coast, and the upper Fraser area, indicating rising river levels without significant flood threats.

The authorities are closely monitoring the situation as inclement weather persists, urging residents to stay informed and take necessary precautions.
