Disney has announced Josh D’Amaro as the new CEO, succeeding Bob Iger. D’Amaro, who has led the company’s theme parks, cruises, and resorts since 2020, will be the ninth CEO in Disney’s history. The experiences division overseen by D’Amaro has been a significant revenue generator, bringing in $36 billion annually in fiscal 2025 and employing 185,000 people globally.
Taking the helm during a prosperous period with successful box office hits like “Zootopia 2” and “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” as well as a strong streaming business, D’Amaro faces challenges in an evolving Hollywood landscape. The industry is grappling with generative AI advancements, streaming and production company consolidations, and perceived government interventions in entertainment operations.
The meticulous selection process for the next Disney CEO followed a failed attempt four years ago, which led to Iger’s return in 2022. Iger continued to serve as a senior advisor and board member until his retirement at the end of the year. The succession planning committee, established in 2023, intensified the search in 2024 under the leadership of Gorman, a former executive chair at Morgan Stanley.
Amid the transition, Disney faces scrutiny and turmoil, especially after controversies involving ABC, a Disney subsidiary. Decisions such as pulling “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” sparked criticism and accusations of government influence in the media landscape. The industry’s integrity has been questioned, with concerns raised about editorial independence and potential corporate mergers facing regulatory challenges.
External and internal candidates were considered for the CEO position, but an internal appointment was anticipated due to Disney’s unique organizational structure and public profile requirements. D’Amaro and Dana Walden emerged as top contenders, with D’Amaro’s extensive experience in overseeing Disney’s investments and licensing, and Walden’s leadership in streaming and media divisions.
D’Amaro’s appointment as CEO and Walden’s role as chief creative officer mark a strategic leadership transition effective March 18. Amidst industry shifts and challenges, Disney aims to navigate its diverse entertainment portfolio under new leadership to sustain its market position and innovation.
