A container vessel, the MSC Baltic III, grounded on the west coast of Newfoundland, has sustained damage from high winds and storm surge in the region recently, as reported by the Canadian Coast Guard. An official update released on Friday highlighted the adverse impact of the extreme weather conditions on the port side of the ship, resulting in noticeable changes. Additionally, significant movements in both the bow and stern sections were observed.

The MSC Baltic III ran aground in Cedar Cove near Lark Harbour on the island’s west coast back in February. Since then, ongoing efforts have been in place for cleanup and salvage operations. Bruce English, a senior response officer from the Marine Environmental and Hazards Section of the Canadian Coast Guard, had previously estimated that the ship would not be removed until the following summer at the earliest due to the remaining oil in its tanks.

Recent reports from the salvage crew indicated damage to their equipment on board the Baltic III, with some debris sighted floating in the water and along the shoreline. Crews are currently on-site conducting assessments to evaluate the extent of the damage. The situation continues to be monitored closely.
