A 13-year-old boy is being hailed for his heroic act of rescuing his mother and two younger siblings by swimming for hours after their family got caught in a dangerous situation off the coast of Australia.
Austin Appelbee swam a distance of four kilometers to shore to seek help after encountering difficulties with his mother, Joanne Appelbee, 47, brother Beau, 12, and sister Grace, 8, according to police reports.
Initially, Austin attempted to seek assistance using an inflatable kayak that was taking on water. However, he decided to abandon the kayak and remove his life jacket to improve his swimming ability.
Despite facing rough sea conditions, Austin persevered and swam for approximately four hours before finally reaching shore and alerting authorities at 6 p.m. He recounted his experience, mentioning, “The waves are massive and I have no life jacket on. … I just kept thinking, just keep swimming, just keep swimming.”
The Appelbee family, on vacation from Perth, had rented kayaks and paddle boards from their hotel. Unfortunately, the strong ocean currents and winds began pulling them out to sea around noon.
A search helicopter located the mother and two children wearing life jackets and holding onto a paddleboard by 8:30 p.m. They had drifted 14 kilometers from Quindalup in Western Australia after spending up to 10 hours in the water.
Inspector James Bradley commended the 13-year-old’s bravery, stating, “The actions of the 13-year-old boy cannot be praised highly enough — his determination and courage ultimately saved the lives of his mother and siblings.”
Joanne Appelbee expressed her difficulty in deciding to send her eldest child for help while she stayed with the other children. She shared her emotional struggle, saying, “One of the hardest decisions I ever had to make was to say to Austin, ‘Try and get to shore and get some help. This could get really serious really quickly.'”
Despite the uncertainty as night approached, the family remained positive, singing and joking until help arrived. They were all shaking from the cold, with Beau experiencing numbness in his legs by the time they were rescued.
All family members received medical evaluations, but none required hospitalization. The reunion of the family brought immense relief as they reflected on the harrowing experience they had just survived.
