The loggerhead shrikes, often seen as plump and soft-feathered birds with striking white patches on their grey and black wings, exhibit a surprising behavior during feeding time. Despite their gentle appearance, they transform into efficient hunters, preying on insects, rodents, and amphibians which they impale on thorns or barbed wire before consuming them.

Known as “butcher birds,” these shrikes, a threatened species primarily found in Saskatchewan’s Prairies, are facing habitat challenges as their natural environments diminish. Witnessing these birds in action, Saskatoon birder Kerry Hjertaas recounted a remarkable encounter where two shrikes swiftly devoured their impaled prey on a barbed-wire fence near his workplace.

Emily Putz, the habitat stewardship co-ordinator of Nature Saskatchewan’s shrubs for shrikes program, explained that shrikes resort to impaling prey due to their lack of talons, a behavior unique to these songbirds in Saskatchewan. With an estimated population of 40,000 shrikes in the province, they are considered a threatened species, just one step away from being endangered.

Habitat loss poses a significant threat to shrikes, as they heavily rely on native prairies for nesting and hunting grounds, a resource that has drastically diminished in Saskatchewan. To adapt, shrikes have started utilizing shelterbelts, but even these are under threat as landowners remove them to accommodate larger farming equipment.

Despite these challenges, efforts are underway to protect shrikes. Nature Saskatchewan conducts annual surveys to monitor shrike populations, while individuals like Hjertaas actively report sightings to aid in conservation efforts. Additionally, the public can contribute by planting thorny shrubs like buffalo berry and hawthorn to support the shrikes’ habitat needs and ensure their continued presence for future generations to appreciate.
