The Canadian government is supporting an artificial intelligence drone innovation from Alberta that aims to replace conventional weather balloons while safeguarding Canadian airspace.
Medicine Hat-based Landing Zones Canada is set to receive a $1.1 million loan from Prairies Economic Development Canada to advance the development and commercialization of their drones, known as GITPO systems. During a recent news conference, CEO Spencer Fraser described the drones as a cost-effective alternative to weather balloons, which typically create electronic waste after use.
The GITPO drones work by riding a balloon to high altitudes, collecting data, and then autonomously returning to a designated spot using AI technology. Unlike traditional weather balloons that are discarded after a single use, these drones can be utilized multiple times, providing an eco-friendly solution for weather data collection.
Landing Zones Canada aims to expand production, both domestically and internationally, following a pilot project with the Canadian government. Fraser highlighted the drones’ potential defense applications, including testing for Canada’s Advanced Arctic Over-the-Horizon Radar initiative.
Eleanor Olszewski, the federal minister overseeing Prairies Economic Development Canada, emphasized the government’s support for responsible AI use in business operations. The investment aligns with a new national defense industrial strategy outlined by Prime Minister Mark Carney, with a focus on bolstering domestic suppliers and enhancing national sovereignty.
The investment in Landing Zones Canada is seen as a step towards diversifying Medicine Hat’s economy beyond its traditional reliance on oil and gas. Mayor Linnsie Clark expressed enthusiasm for attracting skilled talent to the region through initiatives like this.
