Prime Minister Mark Carney announced on Thursday that the opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge was postponed at the request of the United States. The Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority had intended to hold a ribbon-cutting event on Friday but decided to delay it due to some issues raised. Carney stated that the United States had requested the delay to address these outstanding matters, emphasizing the importance of resolving them for the long-term benefit of both Canadians and Americans.

Carney mentioned that there were technical aspects that needed to be worked through with the United States, without specifying the exact nature of these issues. The decision to postpone the opening came amid statements from the White House reaffirming President Donald Trump’s stance on the bridge, despite Canada fully funding its construction and sharing ownership with the state of Michigan.

Dominic LeBlanc, the Canadian federal minister for Canada-U.S. trade, expressed optimism in resolving the remaining issues promptly to facilitate the bridge’s opening. Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens supported the delay, citing the current trade environment and urging for a favorable trade deal with the United States. He emphasized the need to wait for a beneficial agreement rather than rushing the bridge opening.

The Canadian government invested $6.4 billion in building the bridge, utilizing labor and materials from both Canadian and American sources. Industry stakeholders, like Stephen Laskowski, CEO of the Ontario Trucking Association, highlighted the potential benefits of the Gordie Howe Bridge for enhancing cross-border trade efficiency and economic growth.

Former Ontario deputy premier Dwight Duncan was not surprised by the delay, attributing it to unresolved broader trade issues between Canada and the United States. He criticized the delay as an unnecessary setback and emphasized the challenges of dealing with an unpredictable partner in the current trade landscape.

Despite the postponement, Murray Howe, son of Gordie Howe, remained positive, stating that the family would continue their celebration plans even after the ribbon-cutting event cancellation. The delay reflects the ongoing complexities in cross-border relations and the importance of addressing key issues before the bridge’s official opening.
