Newly elected Liberal Member of Parliament Matt Jeneroux is set to accompany Prime Minister Mark Carney on a rapid trade mission to India, Australia, and Japan later this week. Jeneroux, who previously served as a longtime Alberta Conservative, recently made the decision to switch parties, despite earlier intentions to exit politics amidst speculations of joining the Liberal ranks.
As part of his new role as “special adviser on economic and security partnerships,” Jeneroux will be joining the Prime Minister on his international tour, which includes visits to Mumbai, New Delhi, Sydney, Canberra, and Tokyo, as confirmed by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).
Returning to the House of Commons on Tuesday, Jeneroux participated in his first question period as a member of the Liberal party.
Liberal MP Matt Jeneroux, the latest Conservative to switch sides, will be part of the prime minister’s entourage visiting India, Australia, and Japan. International Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu praises Jeneroux’s contributions, stating that his assistance is valued.
Accompanying Prime Minister Carney on the India leg of the trip will be Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne, Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand, Defence Minister David McGuinty, and International Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu, along with New Brunswick Premier Susan Holt and Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe. A smaller group, including Jeneroux, will continue on to Australia and Tokyo.
Responding to Conservative House Leader Andrew Scheer’s criticism of Jeneroux’s shift in focus from politics to family, Trade Minister Sidhu denied that the trip was a reward for Jeneroux.
“His participation adds significant value to our team,” emphasized Sidhu after a cabinet meeting. “We are glad to have his support.”
