Construction is set to begin soon on a water supply pipeline project for the Oneida Nation of the Thames as a company in London, Ontario, secured the federal contract last week. The $23.4 million initiative aims to expand the Lake Huron Primary Water Supply System (LHPWSS) to reach the settlement boundary of the territory south of London, ensuring access to clean drinking water.
Chief Todd Cornelius of the Oneida Nation emphasized that the project signifies a shift towards including First Nations in the development and construction of critical infrastructure within their territories. He highlighted the historical lack of direct participation in such projects and expressed optimism for a more collaborative approach going forward.
Since September 2019, Oneida has been under a boil-water advisory due to reliance on an aging water tower for water supply to over 550 homes and 26 community buildings. The Indigenous Services Canada (ISC) confirmed that the construction process is expected to span two years, aiming to lift the advisory by spring 2027.
The pipeline project, approved in March 2022, will be carried out alongside another initiative to enhance the water distribution system within Oneida. ISC granted budgets for both projects in February, aligning with the goal of improving regional water infrastructure and fostering opportunities within the community.
Mayor Cathy Burghardt-Jesson of Lucan-Biddulph lauded the pipeline project as a significant development for both Oneida and the broader region. She acknowledged the longstanding need for this infrastructure improvement and its positive impact on the community.
Additionally, neighboring First Nations like Chippewas of the Thames and Munsee-Delaware Nation face ongoing challenges with water safety. Efforts are underway to address these issues, including the setup of a bottling station and repair work to mitigate water quality concerns.
