Iranian opposition leader Reza Pahlavi has called on the global community to increase pressure on the Iranian government to support protesters in their bid to overthrow clerical rule. Pahlavi, the 65-year-old son of the deposed Iranian shah, revealed his willingness to lead a transitional government if required, despite a severe crackdown that has largely subdued demonstrations.

During a news conference in Washington, D.C., Pahlavi emphasized the urgent need for political, economic, and military pressure on Tehran, stressing that the current situation demands immediate action. He commended the bravery of the protesters who have defied the oppressive regime since December 28, triggered by economic hardships and sanctions, posing a significant challenge to the ruling clerics since the Islamic Revolution in 1979.

Pahlavi has been a vocal supporter of the demonstrators, with his name resonating at protests, including those in Canada. He pointed out that the regime’s aggressive response indicates its vulnerability to collapse, claiming that significant segments of the Iranian military and security forces have expressed loyalty to him, positioning him uniquely for a stable transition of power in the country.

Acknowledging the ongoing unrest, Pahlavi lauded U.S. President Donald Trump’s stance in support of the Iranian protesters, hinting at the possibility of a “Cyrus Accords” akin to the Abraham Accords brokered by Trump in the Middle East. However, the legitimacy of Pahlavi’s leadership role in Iran’s future has been questioned, including by Trump, who expressed uncertainty about Iranian acceptance of Pahlavi’s leadership.

Pahlavi outlined a comprehensive six-point plan to address the crisis, advocating for targeted actions against the Iranian Revolutionary Guard leadership, intensified economic sanctions, and the utilization of technologies like Starlink to prevent internet shutdowns by the regime. He urged Western nations to expel Iranian diplomats, demand the release of political prisoners, and recognize a transitional government when the time is ripe.

While Trump closely monitors the situation and halts scheduled Iranian executions, a cleric in Iran called for severe punishment, including death sentences for protesters. The cleric’s incendiary rhetoric, backed by the government, blamed foreign entities for inciting unrest, targeting Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Despite reports of sporadic unrest, the crackdown in Iran has quelled protests, with a heavy security presence in previously contentious areas. The death toll, reported by HRANA, stands at 2,677, with both protesters and government affiliates among the casualties. Russian President Vladimir Putin offered to mediate and de-escalate tensions, affirming Moscow’s commitment to a strategic partnership with Iran amidst escalating regional dynamics.

The situation in Iran remains fluid, with international stakeholders closely monitoring developments, while the Iranian populace continues to navigate a volatile political landscape.
