An eighth-grade teacher in Ontario has admitted guilt to charges related to luring and child pornography after using Snapchat to exchange nude images with former students.

Kelly-Anne Jennings, aged 41, made her plea in a courtroom in Peterborough, Ontario, with concerned parents present during the proceedings.

Jennings faced six charges linked to incidents in 2023, including child luring, creating child pornography, and sharing sexually explicit content with a minor, identified as teenage boys who were once her students.

Upon questioning from Ontario Court Justice Nathan N. Baker, Jennings responded with a simple “guilty” plea. Additional charges, including one count of sexual assault, were dropped at the Crown’s request.

According to court documents, Jennings, under the influence of alcohol, progressively sent increasingly explicit content, including videos of her engaging in sexual acts, to her former students via Snapchat. The statement also revealed that Jennings received nude images of the boys upon her request.

A court order prohibits the disclosure of the victims’ identities and any details that could reveal the school where Jennings taught.

One victim’s mother expressed in a statement read in court that her son saw Jennings as a mentor who genuinely cared for him.

She criticized Jennings’ actions as “predatory, manipulative, and extremely harmful.” Crown attorney Julie Ann Barrett accused Jennings of manipulating the boys for her personal sexual gratification.

Following the initial allegations, Jennings was placed on unpaid leave from her teaching position in Port Hope, situated in Northumberland County, east of Toronto.

Later on, the Peterborough, Victoria, Northumberland, and Clarington Catholic District School Board announced that Jennings is no longer employed by the board, acknowledging the distress caused by the serious charges.

The Ontario College of Teachers website indicated Jennings was a member in good standing. The charges against her stemmed from a male student reporting inappropriate behavior during a school trip in August 2024, prompting further complaints and subsequent charges.

While the Crown has suggested a four-year prison term, Jennings’ defense attorney, Dean Embry, proposed a two-year less a day conditional sentence followed by probation instead of jail time.

Jennings is scheduled to appear in court again on November 27.
