U.S. President Donald Trump issued a warning on Thursday about potentially implementing the Insurrection Act to deploy troops in response to ongoing protests against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Minneapolis. This came after a federal officer shot an individual in the leg following an attack with a shovel and broom handle. The incident added to the existing tension in the city, which escalated after an immigration agent fatally shot a woman who was not the target of an immigration operation.

In a social media announcement, Trump emphasized that if Minnesota’s officials do not adhere to the law and prevent agitators from targeting ICE personnel, he would consider invoking the Insurrection Act to quell the unrest. The situation in Minneapolis deteriorated as federal officers, wearing gas masks and helmets, deployed tear gas and grenades amidst clashes with protesters.

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara declared the gathering unlawful and urged people to disperse. The city has witnessed numerous protests since the fatal shooting of Renee Good on Jan. 7 during an extensive immigration crackdown.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey expressed concerns about the overwhelming federal presence, which has caused distress among residents. The Department of Homeland Security reported over 2,000 arrests in Minnesota since early December and affirmed its commitment to the enforcement actions.

Trump has previously mentioned the possibility of invoking the Insurrection Act in various cities, including Minneapolis in 2020 after the George Floyd protests. The act would empower the U.S. military and National Guard to undertake law enforcement duties typically handled by local police.

The recent shooting incident in Minneapolis involved a confrontation with federal law enforcement officers and resulted in non-life-threatening injuries to a man. Governor Tim Walz criticized the federal government’s actions, characterizing them as organized brutality against Minnesotans. Amid escalating tensions, a judge granted the Trump administration time to respond to a request to halt the immigration crackdown in the state.

Local leaders have raised concerns about potential violations of constitutional rights due to the influx of law enforcement personnel. Legal battles are ongoing, with court decisions expected soon to address the tactics used by ICE and federal officers during encounters with protesters.

The situation in Minneapolis remains tense, with ongoing legal and political challenges as authorities grapple with balancing law enforcement efforts and civil liberties.
