Three individuals were reported missing as uncontrollable bushfires swept through the state of Victoria in Australia, causing destruction of residences and extensive burning of bushland, officials confirmed on Friday. Forecasters predicted damaging winds and temperatures soaring as high as 46 degrees Celsius in northern Victoria.

Premier Jacinda Allen of Victoria described the current fire conditions as one of the most perilous in the state in recent years. A fire near Longwood has consumed over 35,000 hectares of bushland, while another blaze near Walwa has expanded to approximately 20,000 hectares since igniting on Wednesday during a severe summer heatwave in southern Australia.

Meteorologists have drawn parallels to the 2019 catastrophic bushfires that ravaged southeastern Australia, leading to the loss of 33 lives during what was termed the Black Summer.

An analysis from Climate Central revealed that human-induced climate change has increased the likelihood of extreme heat by two to five times in various Australian regions. The fire danger rating for Friday was classified as “catastrophic,” the highest level, with authorities warning of significant risks to life and property from the blazes in Longwood and Walwa.

The Walwa fire has triggered its own weather system, generating a pyrocumulonimbus cloud that has resulted in lightning and thunder. Premier Allen emphasized that these extreme fire conditions have been exacerbated by the fires themselves, leading to new fires being sparked by lightning strikes in multiple areas across the state, coupled with strong winds that are expected to persist.

Residents in numerous adjacent towns have been advised to evacuate, while around 450 schools in Victoria were closed and several regional train services were halted on Friday. A statewide total fire ban was enforced on the same day.

In New Zealand, the national weather service, MetService, cautioned about record-breaking warm temperatures over the weekend as the heatwave transits the Tasman Sea. Heat alerts have been issued for sections of the eastern coast of New Zealand and the northern part of the South Island.
