In Winnipeg, snow is a common sight all year round, even on the first day of winter. The city has increasingly become a popular filming location for holiday-themed movies, featuring actors from both local and international backgrounds donning winter gear amidst festive Christmas decorations. Many of these films, including numerous productions for the well-known Hallmark Channel, attract millions of viewers annually.

Rodrigo Beilfuss, a Winnipeg-based actor and director who leads Shakespeare in the Ruins, has notably starred in four Hallmark movies over the past five years. According to Beilfuss, Winnipeg has emerged as a hub for Christmas film production in recent years, garnering recognition on a North American scale.

Amidst the challenges brought by the COVID-19 pandemic, Beilfuss transitioned from stage performances to auditioning for film roles, emphasizing the abundance of talented actors available in Winnipeg for various genres, whether it be festive Hallmark productions or classic plays like Hamlet. Beilfuss also appears in locally-shot action films like “Nobody 2” and “Violent Night 2.”

Lynne Skromeda, CEO and film commissioner at Manitoba Film and Music, highlighted the thriving film and television production industry in the province. Manitoba’s attractive incentives, including the most competitive film and production tax credit in Canada, coupled with a skilled workforce and top-notch infrastructure, continue to draw filmmakers to the region.

Winnipeg’s enduring winters and diverse landscapes provide a unique backdrop for filmmakers, with its architectural variety allowing the city to stand in for multiple locations on screen. Beilfuss, originally from Brazil, expressed how starring in Hallmark movies has enabled him to connect with audiences globally, spreading joy and positivity through his performances.

The appeal of these light-hearted holiday films lies in their ability to bring happiness to viewers, especially in challenging times, as Beilfuss believes that infusing a bit of fun and joy into people’s lives is truly rewarding.
