I’ve always been fascinated by the intense heat experienced in subway stations. The concept of utilizing this excess heat for cooling purposes elsewhere strikes me as innovative. Similar to how waste heat from sources like nuclear power plants, paper mills, and sewers is used for heating buildings, why not apply this idea to subways?
This week’s highlights include:
1. Innovative Canadian technology aims to cool overheated subways in New York City.

3. Understanding ‘wishcycling’ and the crackdown on this practice in certain municipalities.
Underground subway stations worldwide, including those in Canadian cities like Montreal, are becoming increasingly hot, leading to complaints from commuters. In a bid to address this issue, a Canadian company is testing an energy-efficient cooling solution in New York City’s subway system.
Cascara Energy, based in Toronto, along with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority of New York City, is installing a radiant cooling system in the ceiling arches of the East Broadway station. This system, utilizing loops of chilled water-filled pipes to absorb heat, aims to enhance passenger comfort without traditional air conditioning units, offering a more compact and efficient cooling solution.
The innovative system not only aims to keep passengers cool but also has the potential to recover and recycle heat for other purposes, as outlined in the MTA’s Climate Resilience Roadmap of October 2025.
Subway systems generate heat from various sources like people, electronics, and train systems. By capturing and repurposing this heat, the Cascara Energy system aims to enhance subway infrastructure efficiency and reduce reliance on fossil fuels for heating purposes.
The London Underground already recycles waste heat for its Bunhill 2 Energy Centre, demonstrating the viability and benefits of such systems. Cascara Energy’s CEO, Robert Croghan, believes in the system’s potential to revolutionize cooling practices in transit systems globally, with hopes that the New York pilot project will pave the way for wider adoption.
The initiative not only addresses the overheating challenges in subways but also presents an opportunity to harness wasted heat for sustainable energy solutions. By exploring innovative approaches to heat recovery, Cascara Energy is leading the way towards a more energy-efficient and sustainable future.
