The government is planning to reduce thousands of jobs in the public service sector and implement artificial intelligence (AI) technologies to streamline operations, leading to concerns about the quality of federal government services. The move is part of Prime Minister Mark Carney’s budget strategy to align public service job growth with the general population by eliminating 40,000 positions.
Two major public service unions, the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) and the Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada (PIPSC), have expressed alarm over the potential impact of these job cuts on service delivery. According to Alex Silas, PSAC’s national executive vice-president, cutting jobs without reducing workloads raises questions about maintaining service quality for Canadians.
Silas criticized the government for lack of transparency in revealing detailed plans for service delivery post-job cuts. For instance, Employment and Social Development Canada plans to reduce its workforce by 15,629 employees by 2029 through AI automation and operational streamlining.
Environmental advocates are also raising concerns about the government’s plan to cut over 1,400 public service jobs at Environment and Climate Change Canada by 2029. This move is seen as a step back in the commitment to reducing emissions and supporting environmental initiatives. Funding for environmental programs, such as the Low Carbon Economy Fund, is being reduced, indicating a shift in priorities.
Furthermore, the union PIPSC highlighted the loss of critical jobs, including scientists and analysts, despite an increase in government spending. Funding for initiatives like the zero-emissions vehicle mandate incentive program is being cut, with a new $2.3 billion program introduced to promote electric vehicle adoption.
